Fire, Burn Bright

"This sprightly piece celebrates something we all love on a cold winter's day: the crackling logs in the fireplace. A traditional folk poem from the English West Country provided the text. A colorful piano accompaniment adds great interest to the clever melodic realization of the text as it describes the various kinds of logs and how they react when lit. Fire, Burn Bright

Traditional, British Isles

Oaken logs will warm you well,

that are old and dry;

Logs of pine will sweetly smell,

but the sparks will fly.

Birch logs will bum too fast;

chestnut, scarce at all.

Hawthorn logs are good to last,

cut them in the fall.

Refrain:

Fire burn bright,

long into the night,

Fire burn warm

keep away the damp and chill 'til morn.

Holly logs will burn like wax,

you may burn them green;

Elm logs, like to smouldering flax,

no flame to be seen.

Beech logs for the winter-time,

Yew logs as well.

Green alder logs it is a crime

for any man to sell. [Refrain]

Pear logs and apple logs,

they will scent your room.

Cherry logs across the dogs

smell like flowers of broom.

Ash logs, smooth and grey,

burn them green or old;

Buy up all that come your way,
worth their weight in gold. [Refrain]
